Preview updated: 09/05/2019, Updates: It looks a lot like Sony's other a6000-series models at first glance, but this one has the biggest battery and the best build quality of the bunch, even if the images it produces are broadly comparable to the less expensive options. With its Fast Hybrid AF, Sony claims that the A6600 can achieve focus in as little as 0.02 seconds. Fans of 24p will be pleased Sonyâs still allowing it when Canonâs strangely neglecting 24p on non-Cinema cameras. SONY a6600 has IBIS which makes pictures more sharp and perfectly in focus. The A6600 becomes the first Sony APSC body to use the companyâs higher capacity FZ100 battery pack, increasing the life to 810 shots under CIPA conditions, roughly double the A6400 and more in fact than the full-frame bodies which use it. Above: in the first disappointment on a $1400 flagship body, the A6600 continues to employ a single SD card slot, and worse, it still wonât exploit the speed of UHS-II cards – an annoying decision for a camera thatâs otherwise so effective for sports, action and wildlife, and after shooting a large burst you can be left waiting some time for the buffer to clear. But where the A6400âs smaller battery ran out after around one hourâs worth of 4k, the bigger battery in the A6600 allowed me to record a single 4k 24p clip beyond three hours without even having to reduce the over-heating warning. The camera is 4.72 inches (120 millimeters) wide, 2.63 in. It’s paired with the latest BIONZ X processor. 1,51,990 in India with the kit lens While it may look very similar to the A6400 and A6500, the new A6600 does add a fourth custom button to the camera body. When shooting in low light, the A6600 is rated to focus from around -2 EV to 20 EV (ISO 100 at f/2.0), so it should prove fairly capable in low light. In my tests the built-in stabilisation may not have delivered the eerie floating effect of the best models out there, but still proved beneficial for static shooting. It tilts 180 degrees upward and 74 degrees downward. The Sony A6600 blends many aspects of the Sony A6400 and A6500 cameras while also adding some new features. As Sony's new flagship APS-C camera, the 24.2-meagpixel A6600 has a lot to live up to. Donât get me wrong, itâs not bad, but just outclassed in resolution by a number of rivals, again including the Fujifilm X-T3 which sports a 3.69 Million dot panel thatâs more typical on a flagship body in 2019. Considering its power supply, the A6600 uses a different type of battery than its predecessors, Sony's NP-FZ100 rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The Sony a6600 has an industry-leading autofocus system, is capable of excellent images and video, comes with very useful in-body image stabilization and has the best battery life of any mirrorless camera on the market at this time. For stabilization, the A6600 includes SteadyShot Inside 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a feature present in the A6500 but missing from the A6400. The A6600 includes persistent real-time tracking and real-time eye AF. In terms of body design, the A6600 has an extended tilting range for its touchscreen and includes a headphone jack. This larger battery offers up to approximately 810 shots, which is about 2.2x better than the battery life of the A6400 and A6500 cameras, which use Sony's smaller W-type battery. On the Sony, it’s either red & green or blue & green (Bayer ar… This is great when filming 16:9 video as it fills the screen, but when shooting still photos in the native 3:2 shape, the image will be presented in a crop with black bars on the left and right sides. This shifts the sensor to stabilise any lens you attach and like the A6500 before it, with variable results depending on your movement at the time. Compare it to the Fujifilm X-T3 for instance which in my tests managed less than 400 photos or just one hourâs worth of 4k video (cut into two clips too) on a single charge. The A6600 now includes a built-in intervalometer, but it drops Sony's in-camera Sweep Panorama support. Infuriatingly the chunky icons of the Function menu remain untappable, as does the main menu system, while in playback Sony ignores years of smartphone intuition by not even allowing you to swipe between images. Both have a front-end LSI chip to increase the processing speed. Nikon Z TC-1.4x TC-2.0x teleconverter review. It uses Sony's Real-time Tracking autofocus technology, which seamlessly and reliably transitions from subject tracking to face detection and finally to eye detection. Announced in August 2019, it replaces the three-year-old A6500 as Sonyâs flagship body and like that model, follows the most recent unstabilised Alpha body, in this case, the A6400, by just seven months. When you are using an OSS-equipped lens, the lens handles two axes of correction while the camera corrects shake on the other three. The Sony A6600 is built around the concept of speed and that is evident when considering the camera's autofocus and overall performance. Like prior tilting Sony displays, the A6600's display does not tilt to the side. Above: The A6600 becomes the second body in the A6000 series to offer built-in stabilisation, inheriting the exact same capabilities as the A6500. As you can see, the IBIS works well when there’s little or no movement of the camera. Above: Like other recent Sony cameras, the A6600 lets you choose from a variety of autofocus areas from a variable-sized single area through Zone to Wide where you hand over the reins entirely to the camera. As Sony's flagship APS-C camera, the A6600 offers quite a few physical controls and customizable buttons. The 24.2 Megapixel APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor has a typical 1.5 times crop factor. Sony A6600 As for video, it all remains pretty standard for Sony. The A6600 has Sony's Multi Interface hot shoe on the top as well, but it does not include the digital audio interface found on the A7R Mark IV. The Z battery is by far the highlight of the A6600 and its number one upgrade over earlier models. With Steadyshot enabled in the menu, the view is temporarily wobbly, but after a second or so of holding the shutter release down, the system kicks-in to deliver a far more stable view. Iâm also disappointed to find the hotshoe doesnât support a digital connection with the new microphone launched with the A7r IV (although you can still use it in analogue mode). Video looks superbly clear and pin sharp. You can double-tap to enlarge the view then push it around, but Sony really needs to extend its touch functionality on all models. The A7 III sensor has a BSI structure (back-illuminated) whereas the A6600 chip features a copper wiring layer to improve transmission. Iâve got to a point with Sony cameras where I rarely over-ride the Wide area mode with Real Time Tracking as it simply works so well for most subjects. Above: the larger battery means a larger grip to accommodate it and I welcome having more to hold onto with a small body. So you can film uncropped 1080 at 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60p, or at 100 or 120p with a mild crop for slow motion. The A6600 uses the APS-C format whereas the A7 III has a 35mm format sensor, which is about 2.3x larger. Further, its autofocus system is improved, with the A6600 offering 425 PDAF and 425 CDAF points compared to the A6500's 425 PDAF and only 169 CDAF points. Like other recent Sony bodies, the A6600 allows you to tap to reposition the AF area – including when composing through the viewfinder – but not much else. In terms of video alone, I even managed to record a single 4k 24p clip lasting three hours and 25 minutes on a full charge. When using it as a selfie display, there is a slight bit of the display which is obscured by the top plate of the camera, but it's a very small portion of the screen. Sony quotes 810 shots under CIPA conditions – roughly double that of the A6400 and a tad more than the full-framers which use it – but I managed over 900 shots on a single charge including several minutes of video and Wifi use. The major physical difference is the deeper grip to accommodate the larger battery, more about which in a moment. At this continuous high shooting mode, the camera does not offer live view, but instead shows the most recently-shot image. First, the Fuji sensor has a different distribution of pixels. At this point it's reasonable to wonder how much of the A6600 is really new, as many features are shared between the A6400, A6500 and A6600 cameras. Do however note that their combined price is roughly the same as the full-frame A7 III fitted with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 zoom, so literally something to weigh-up in comparison if you donât mind the larger combination. Some may be disappointed the resolutionâs not increased, but in terms of photo quality I have no complaints as while Fujifilmâs current lineup offers 26 Megapixels and Canonâs pushed the boat out to 32.5 on the M6 II, I feel 24 or thereabouts remains a sweet-spot for resolution, noise and dynamic range on an APSC sensor and you can see a broad range of photos on my samples page. You still find both S-Log2 and S-Log3 as well as frame rates up to 120fps in HD and up to 30fps in UHD 4K. 1 The α9 and Sony full-frame cameras that were released after the α9. If you'd like a real-time viewfinder, you can slow the camera down to 8 frames per second. Sony's a6600 doesn't exactly introduce any brand new technology, but its combination of winning features like a higher-capacity battery and seamless tracking autofocus means it's shaping up to be a very compelling camera. By sticking with the same capabilities as the A6300 from three years ago, Sonyâs allowed rivals to now offer faster speeds, including the Fujifilms which offer 20fps if you switch to their electronic shutter, while Canonâs M6 II boasts a 14fps mode. Remember the resolution of the viewfinder doesnât affect the image quality, but you do appreciate the extra detail when manually focusing and experience less moire on detailed scenes – I really noticed the difference when framing my wide-angle city views around New York. Fujifilmâs X-T3 has twin SD slots, both of which exploit UHS-II speeds, and itâs also one of the first aspects about the A6600 which might have you considering the full-frame A7 III instead. (69.3mm). The A6600 becomes the first A6000 model to sport a headphone jack and while itâs long overdue, Iâm still pleased to see it here – along with the bigger battery, itâs another of the key upgrades over the A6400 and A6500. There may be no 4k above 30p, nor any 10-bit recording internal or external – all of which is available on the Fujifilm X-T3 – but thereâs no arguing with the quality of Sonyâs oversampled 4k footage. Sony a6600 Specs. The camera's 4K UHD video recording derives from a 6K oversampled recording for improved quality. Instead itâs Sonyâs earlier Multi Interface Shoe, although this will still power the ECM-B1M and support an analogue connection without a cable; so while thereâs an unnecessary conversion from digital to analogue then back again with the possibility of an increase in noise, the mic can still apply its DSP effects and Iâll demonstrate them later. The a6600 holds many of the same features found in prior models and in other Sony camera lines. The A6600 also becomes the first APSC model in the range to sport a (long overdue) headphone jack, and it now additionally supports eye detection in movies. Since the main body design hasnât changed, the A6600 inherits the 3in 16:9 shaped screen of its predecessors, making it wider than most. For starters, the native ISO range is now 100-32,000, whereas the A6500's native range topped out at ISO 25,600. However, I have to say this video is a bit disappointing. Sony has long been saying that they will continue to support their APS-C mirrorless cameras and at an event last week in New York City, the company showcased their commitment to the format. The A6600, like the A6XXX series cameras, can shoot at up to 11 frames per second continuously with full AF/AE. The A7 camera has an ISO range of 100 to 51200, with extended values going up to … In terms of buffer depths, Sony rates the camera for 46 raw images at 11 fps and 116 JPEG images before the buffer fills, but we will verify these specs in our lab testing. As I mentioned before, it may seem a little odd to be writing a review of the Sony a6000 in 2020, several years after its release. While the A6600's 24.2-megapixel APS-C Exmor CMOS image sensor is not new, with their latest Bionz X image processor and additional improvements, the sensor behaves a bit differently in the A6600. Above: The A6600 employs the 24 Megapixel APSC sensor introduced on the A6300 three and a half years earlier, which means it also inherits a broad array of 425 phase-detect autofocus points across the full height and 84% of the width – thatâs pretty much the entire frame. Further, the A6600 processes images in 16-bit before outputting a final 14-bit raw file, which Sony states results in improved texture detail, shadow detail and tonal gradation. The image processor and improved LSI were first seen in the Sony A9, so it's interesting to see how Sony's latest and greatest tech improvements trickle down to their more affordable, and in this case smaller-sensored, cameras. But personally I wasnât fond of the shape of the A6600âs new grip which bulged-out as it met the body without providing much of a hooked inner area for your finger tips. For customizing the autofocus performance, the user can adjust the AF drive speed and AF tracking sensitivity for recording video. The 3-inch touchscreen, which has only 921k dots, has an increased tilting range. Above:the A6600 inherits the articulated screen mechanism of the A6400, allowing it to angle down by almost 90 degrees and up by 180 to face you for selfies or vlogging; this represents greater flexibility than the earlier A6500, although itâs matched by most models now including Sonyâs own cheaper A6100. The video below was shot with the Sony A6600 in 4K at 25p and 100Mbs hand-held to test the in-body image stabilisation (IBIS). It is not purely about specs when thinking about autofocus, features matter too. ... For my test vlogging video, I set the LCD in selfie position and used the a6600’s built-in microphone rather than attaching an auxiliary mike. The Sony a6600 is the company's top-of-the-line APS-C mirrorless camera, with 24MP of resolution and 4K video capture. Itâs no different from other recent Sonys, but it still works well. This allows for improved image processing, speed and overall performance. If you have never used a Sony camera, or are coming from a point and shoot style camera, or cell phone, than this is a must watch video! As for the viewfinder, it is an XGA OLED EVF with 2.36M dots and 0.7x magnification. The Sony A6600 is an upper mid-range mirrorless camera with a 24 Megapixel APSC sensor, built-in stabilisation, 4k video, 11fps bursts with autofocus, and increased battery life. In this video I will go over the initial set-up of the Sony A6600 so you can skip the manual and get out there and start taking photos and recording videos as fast as possible.. In total, the A6600 weighs 1.11 pounds (503 grams) with the larger Z battery inserted (more on that later) and with an SD memory card. Due to IBIS low ISO is possible even I low light and that is richer color and no noise. Note the X-T3âs screen also tilts vertically, but additionally lets you angle it out a little to the side for easier framing in the portrait orientation at high or low angles. As for some of the other new features added to the a6600; the headphone jack seems like a basic function essential to all video shooters and something that Sony … Like the A6400, the viewfinder remains XGA in resolution, thereâs only one card slot (albeit rotated within the chunkier grip in order to accommodate the bigger battery), and while 4k at 24 and 25p use the full sensor width and oversample from 6Kâs worth of data, 4k at 30p still incurs a minor crop. The Sony A6600 is an upper mid-range mirrorless camera with a 24 Megapixel APSC sensor, built-in stabilisation, 4k video, 11fps bursts with autofocus, and increased battery life. Sony does exploit this spare area for shooting information, but the active image area for stills remains smaller than rivals with narrower screens. I’m really looking forward to your lens guide. 08/30/2019: Gallery Images added. With respect to the camera's operability while writing to the card, which has long been a sore spot with Sony cameras, the A6600 promises improved performance here, although during our hands-on time with the camera there were still some issues, which we will investigate further when we get extended time with the camera. For a full comparison of the video modes, the stabilisation and a vlogging test, please check out my full review video at the top of this page! The shutter block remains unchanged too with a top mechanical speed of 1/4000 when most rivals at this price boast 1/8000. Above: I was surprised to discover the A6600âs hotshoe does not include the pins introduced on the A7r IV to support a digital connection with the new ECM-B1M microphone. Fujifilm may now offer phase-detect AF across the entire frame, but Sonyâs eye and overall tracking software remains the most confident in my view. 5 years in technology is a long time, and there are many photographers who wouldn’t even consider a camera that’s 1 year old, let alone 5. Shedding some light on the sources of noise. Further, the autofocus points cover about 84 percent of the image area, which should make it easier to track moving subjects throughout the frame. The A6600 utilizes a 4D Focus hybrid autofocus system, which incorporates 425 phase-detect autofocus points and 425 contrast-detect AF points. In short, itâs the longest life of any mirrorless camera Iâve tested. Hereâs an example I filmed in 4k 24p and itâs jam-packed with detail. You can see it here passing three hours with 8% of the battery remaining – I ended up recording 3 hours, 25 mins and 17 secs of 4k 24p at 60Mbit/s in a single clip measuring 89GB – seriously impressive stuff for anyone recording events, interviews or lectures, and way beyond anything its rivals can do – I keep going on about Fujifilmâs X-T3, but it can only record half hour 4k clips up to 30p and only two of them on a single charge. There is no front command dial, so when shooting in manual mode, the rear control wheel acts as a command dial in conjunction with the traditional dial above the thumb grip. The Fuji model has slightly more resolution: 26.1MP versus 24.2MP on the Sony. The camera also features 425 phase and contrast autofocus points. In this review I will be covering the Sony FE 200-600mm G OSS Lens from a Real World Perspective using the Sony A6600 which will yield me an effective 300-900mm range!! At the core of its imaging pipeline, the A6600 includes a 24.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor and Sony's latest Bionz X image processor. Like many new cameras, it combines or enhances elements from existing models, so at the heart is the 24 Megapixel sensor introduced on the A6300 with its broad and confident autofocus coverage, 11fps bursts and oversampled 4k video up to 30p. But overall with stabilisation, much longer battery life and a headphone jack, the A6600 resolves pretty much all the major issues with the A6400 and becomes the most desirable APSC body in the series, especially when coupled with the new e 16-55mm f2.8 zoom launched alongside it. The HDMI port will output clean 4k, but sadly thereâs still no 10-bit here internal or external, again a feature available on the Fujifilm X-T3 and even externally on the cheaper X-T30. Above: The A6600 inherits the movie quality, video autofocus and unlimited recording of the A6400 before it, with the only new feature being support for eye-detection; since face detection already worked so well though, itâs not a significant upgrade over the cheaper model.
